Nella foresta di Compiegne, Piccardia, Francia, a bordo di un vagone del treno privato di Ferdinand Foch, comandante delle forze alleate, viene firmato l’armistizio che pone fine ai combattimenti sul fronte occidentale. Le condizioni che vengono poste alla nazione sconfitta, la Germania, sono particolarmente severe. Come ora per la fine dei combattimenti vengono indicate le 11 del mattino (undicesima ora dell’undicesimo giorno dell’undicesimo mese). È la pace. Non durerà a lungo.

In the forest of Compiegne – Picardy, France – aboard Ferdinand Foch’s private train, an armistice is signed marking the end of the fighting on the western front. The conditions that are imposed on the defeated nation, Germany, are particularly harsh. The armistice is signed at 05:00 a.m. but it will come into effect at 11:00 a.m., “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”. It is peace. It will not last for long.
